The sun shone brightly over Lower Castle Park in Colchester as the Suffolk Swords returned for the much-anticipated combined Roman & Medieval Festival! This year’s event, held on June 1st and 2nd, was a fantastic opportunity to delve into history, and we were thrilled to be a part of it.
Over the two days, we presented a thrilling combat display, showcasing the skills and ferocity of medieval warriors. The clash of steel echoed through the park as our swordsmen expertly wielded their blades, captivating the audience with a glimpse into the realities of medieval combat.
But our participation wasn’t limited to swordplay. We also had the chance to experience life on the receiving end of weaponry when we volunteered as targets (don’t worry, we were well-protected!) during an archery display. Feeling the thunk of an arrow as it hit you adds a new dimension to appreciating the skill of these historical archers!
Throughout the festival, we were delighted to chat with countless visitors, young and old. We shared our passion for living history, discussing everything from swordsmanship techniques to the daily lives of people in the medieval period. The enthusiasm for history was truly inspiring, and it was a pleasure to answer questions and spark imaginations.
A special shout-out has to go to the organizers for putting together such a brilliant event. The Colchester Roman & Medieval Festival was a fantastic blend of historical re-enactment, demonstrations, and entertainment, offering something for everyone.
If you missed us this time around, fear not! The Suffolk Swords are dedicated to sharing our love of history throughout the year. Be sure to follow us on social media to stay up-to-date on our upcoming events and displays. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
